Theme
The theme is NOT the same thing as the topic. Theme is the main idea or the message of a piece of literature, somewhat like the moral. The topic is what the text is about, like a summary. One theme can apply to many such texts. This is called a universal theme. This theme teaches a message about nature or about life that recurs in many works of literature. These themes are very common and familiar. A recurring theme is like a universal theme, but occurs in a particular event or a certain time period.
