What is Plot?
Plot is the series of events in a narrative.
What are the main components of Plot?
The plot is usually composed of five stages.
What are the stages and how are they sequenced?
The stages of a linear plot are; Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and Resolution. That is , usually how a plot of a story is organized. The exposition is the beginning of the story. This is the stage when the rudimentary elements of the story are introduced. The writer may also give a glance of the conflict in the exposition. The rising action is when the conflict comes into play. The story has also began to mature and develop to the climax. The climax is the greatest point of tension, or the turning point of a story. The tension starts to decline and decrease in the falling action. Resolution is the final stage of a linear plot. The conflict of the story has been resolved. The majority of writers sequence their events in chronological order. You may ask, "What is chronological order?" Well, chronological order states the events of the story in the order the events occurred. A writer may use signal words and phrases as well as times and dates to help you follow along. Think of plot as a mountain. You climb the mountain by starting at the base and getting a feel of the mountain (exposition). Then, you start to actually scale the side of the mountain and you are beginning to reach the zenith (rising action). Finally, the moment you've been waiting for has finally arrived. You are at the peak of the mountain. You may even snap a selfie or two to show that you climbed the mountain! (climax). Then, comes the descent. Your endeavour is coming to an end as the tenseness decreases (falling action). Finally, your back at the base and can't wait to share your experience with others (resolution).
Now, let us apply the skill into the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry.
